Two to three years is realistic, against the four to five manufacturers quote for temperate climates. Sustained heat above 45°C drives the internal chemical reaction faster than the battery was designed for, boils water out of the electrolyte and corrodes the plates. Heat, not mileage, is what limits battery life here.

Heat damage is cumulative and invisible. A degraded battery will often still show a healthy resting voltage of around 12.5V and still start the car in mild conditions, then fail on the first genuinely hot morning. That is why a load test matters far more than a voltage reading.

Considerably. A ten-minute drive never lets the alternator replace the charge the starter drew, especially with the air conditioning at full load. The battery lives permanently part-charged, which sulphates the plates and takes capacity that does not come back.

Yes, and it is one of the most common causes we see. Alarms, trackers, keyless entry and control modules draw current continuously, so two or three weeks parked can flatten a healthy battery. Every full discharge permanently reduces capacity, so a car that goes flat repeatedly will need a battery regardless of its age. A maintainer solves it properly.

When done correctly, yes. Modern vehicles are sensitive to voltage spikes and reversed polarity, which is why we use proper equipment rather than clamping onto another car's battery. The risk in a bad jump start is to the electronics, not the battery.

It depends when it died. If it ran fine and then would not start again after standing overnight, that points at the battery. If it died while driving, or shortly after the jump, that points at the alternator not charging. Those are quite different repairs and a charging-voltage test separates them in a minute.

Timing is the clearest signal. Battery faults show up when starting; alternator faults show up while running. A battery-shaped warning light illuminated with the engine running is a charging system warning, not a low-battery warning. Headlights that brighten as you rev and dim at idle point at the alternator too.

Either the alternator is not charging it, or something is drawing current with the car switched off, or the battery was never registered to the car on a vehicle that requires it. All three are diagnosable, and fitting a second new battery will not resolve any of them.

A flooded battery holds liquid electrolyte and suits conventional cars. An EFB is a reinforced flooded design that copes with light start-stop duty. An AGM holds its electrolyte in a glass mat, tolerates deep cycling and heavy electrical loads, and is what most modern European cars require. If your car came with AGM, stay with AGM — downgrading is not safe, though upgrading generally is.

On most modern European vehicles, yes. The car stores the battery's age and state of health and calculates its charging strategy from that record. Fit a new battery without updating it and the car keeps charging to a worn-out battery's profile, which is the most common reason a new battery fails inside a year.

Not if it is done properly. We connect a memory saver before disconnecting the old battery so the modules stay powered. Without one you would typically lose the clock, radio presets, seat memory and driver profiles, and on some cars the windows need recalibrating.

Usually, if you keep the car for several years. Heat is the limiting factor and better construction tolerates it longer, so the premium tier often works out cheaper per year of service. For an older car, a low-use second vehicle or something you are about to sell, a value battery is a perfectly sensible purchase — and we will say so.

We take it away for recycling. Lead-acid batteries are classified as hazardous waste and cannot legally go into a building or domestic waste stream. Because scrap lead has value, we offset it against your invoice rather than charging a disposal fee.
