On i-ELOOP vehicles the capacitor is a separate component from the battery and can fail independently — a failed capacitor produces charging system warnings and disabled i-stop while the battery is perfectly healthy. Diagnosing one as the other is a common and expensive error. Mazda's i-stop system requires the new battery to be initialised so the control module resets its capacity learning, and without that step i-stop will typically refuse to activate. Mazda also specifies a higher-than-expected cold cranking figure for i-stop applications, because restarting a warm engine repeatedly is more demanding than a single cold start.

It is Mazda's capacitor-based regenerative braking system, which stores energy in an electric double-layer capacitor rather than a battery. It can fail independently of the battery, and when it does you get charging warnings and disabled i-stop with a perfectly healthy battery.
Why does my Mazda's i-stop no longer work after a new battery?
Almost certainly because the battery was not initialised to the control module. Mazda learns battery capacity, and until that learning is reset the system assumes the battery is worn and refuses to engage i-stop.
Does my Mazda need an EFB battery?
